Goal #4: Network Performance Verification

Mission:

Work with the staffs of the international (Tier0), national (Tier1), regional (Tier2) and local (Tier3) Grid facilities as needed, to verify high throughput and network responsiveness, in association with the Grid projects, and for new collaborative interactive systems.

Activities:

We have developed and set up a network monitoring infrastructure for meauring high-performance bulk throughput application and network performance from SLAC to about 35 other grid facilities. Setting this up required collaboration with the staffs at the remote sites to obtain accounts etc. The results and data are publicly available from SLAC WAN Bandwidth Measurement and Monitoring.

The next steps are to prepare and deploy the infrastructure at other sites. As part of this we hope to engage other sites in the devlopment of the infrastructure, in particular in the areas of improving security, developing a distributed gathering and archiving system, and adding new analysis/reporting tools.

Milestones:

  • Develop basic infrastructure to enable robust measurements to be made on an ongoing basis from a single site. [Done]
  • Develop first version of archiving, analysis and reporting tools. [Done]
  • Modify the infrastructure to enable porting the application to other sites. [In progress]
  • Add moredetailed measurements using Web100. [In progress]
  • Work with staffs from 2 or 3 other sites to port the infrastructure and enable those sites to make their own measurements. [Fall 2002]
  • Improve the security model for the infrastructure. [Winter 2002]
  • Develop a way to gather data from multiple measurement sites. [Winter 2002]
  • Extend archiving, analysis and reporting to encompass multiple measurement sites.
